Blocking a contact:

1. Type the name of the contact you wish the block into the Search box at the top of the chat list.
2. In the box that appears, click Chat to open a chat window with that user. They will not be notified unless you type a message into that window.
3. In the chat window click Actions menu.
4. From the menu, select the option to Block the specific contact.

Blocking a contact will block them across all of Google’s network.

Unblocking a contact who is only blocked in Chat:

1. Type the name of the contact you wish to unblock into the Search field at the top of the chat list.
2. In the box that appears, click Unblock (or uncheck the Block option in Gmail).

Alternatively, you can unblock a contact through the Options/Actions menu at the bottom of any open chat window.

1. Go to their profile.
2. On the side of the profile click Block [person's name].
3. Confirm that you want to block that person.

You can also block someone while editing your circles and in hangouts.

The following are the results of blocking someone. Keep in mind that the limits placed upon the person you’ve blocked are only enforced when they’re logged in. For instance, if someone you’ve blocked is signed in, they won’t be able to see your public posts, but if they aren’t signed in, they may be able to see those posts. When you block someone:

• You won’t see their content in your stream (even though you’ll remain in their circles).
• They’ll be removed from any circles of yours that they appear in.
• They’ll be removed from your extended circles, even if you have mutual connections.
• They won’t be able to add new comments to your content. However, comments they made before you blocked them will still be visible and can be deleted or reported.
• They won’t be able to see your comments on other people’s posts.
• They won’t be able to view any of your posts that you share after blocking them.
• They won’t be able to mention you in posts or comments.

After you block someone, the content you’ve previously shared with them will still be visible in their Home page. They can’t engage with the post (comment, etc.)

When you block someone, we won’t proactively notify them (unless you block them from within a hangout). But since blocking someone limits the interactions that person can have with you, they may figure out that they’ve been blocked.

To see the list of people you’ve blocked, click the  menu on your Circles page, then selectView blocked.

To enable specific circles for Chat:

1. Find your name at the very top of the Chat list on the right.
2. Click the drop down arrow next to your name.
3. Click Privacy Settings.
4. Select the circles you want to be able to chat with.

If you no longer want contacts in a circle to be able to chat with you, you can disable that circle. To disable circles for chat, unselect the circles in your Privacy Settings.

Enabling and disabling circles for chat can currently only be done in Google+.

Your Chat lists in other Google products will have all of your existing contacts plus the contacts you add to your Google+ Chat enabled Circles.

There may be some differences between Chat in Google+ and Chat in other Google products, including:

• The order of contacts in your Chat lists.
• Certain Chat features are not available across all Google products. Check out our known issues page to find out which features aren’t yet available or are different in Google+ Chat.
• All of the contact relationships you had before you started using Chat enabled Circles are preserved and take priority. For example, if you had someone blocked in Gmail and then try to add them to a Chat enabled Circle on Google+, the Gmail blocking will still take priority. So, you’ll be unable to talk to them until you unblock them in Gmail.

• If you invite people to join a hangout, a post will appear in their stream telling them that there’s a hangout going on, along with all the people in that hangout currently.
• If 25 or fewer people are invited, they’ll receive a notification that they’ve been invited to join a hangout.
• If you invite individuals that are signed in to chat, they’ll receive an IM with a link to join.
• If someone invited to a hangout tries to start their own, they’ll be told that there’s a hangout already going on and they may want to join that one instead.
• Other hangout participants have the option to share the hangout with their Circles. So, it’s possible that people you don’t know may learn that you’re hanging out.

To invite phone participants:

1. Click Invite at the top of the hangout window.
2. Click the Telephone tab at the top of the page, or the +telephone link on the side of the invite screen.
3. Enter the phone number you wish to call.

• Go to plus.google.com/hangouts.
• Click the Start a Hangout button on the top right side of your screen.
• Click the Hangouts icon underneath an interesting post on your Home page to start a hangout about the post.

You’ll be taken to an invite screen where you’ll be able to:

1. Make sure you’re mic and camera are working correctly by looking at your video feed at the bottom of the page. You should be able to see yourself in the video feed, and when you talk, you should see a green bar appear at the bottom of your video. If you’re having issues with your mic or camera, try these troubleshooting steps.
2. Invite entire circles or specific individuals to join you in your hangout. Learn more about inviting people to your hangout.
3. Restrict people under the age of 18 from joining your hangout by selecting the checkbox next to Restrict minors from joining this hangout. Other hangout participants won’t be able to invite minors and, the 18+ restriction cannot be changed once the hangout has started.

Invite people at the start

1. Click Start a Hangout on the top right side of your screen.
2. Add entire circles or just individuals that you want to hang out with.You can choose to make the hangout only available to people who are 18 or older by selecting the checkbox next to Restrict minors from joining this hangout. Other hangout participants won’t be able to invite minors and, the 18+ restriction cannot be changed once the hangout has started.
3. Invite phone participants to join the hangout by clicking the Telephone tab at the top of the page and dialing the phone number you wish to invite. Learn more about inviting phone participants.
4. Click Invite to start the hangout and send the notifications to the people you chose.

Invite people later

You or anyone else in the hangout can invite additional people after the hangout has already begun. Here’s how to invite people from within a hangout:

1. Click Invite at the top of the hangout window.
2. Type someone’s name, the name of a circle, or click one of the profile pictures of the people in your circles who are currently online.
3. Click Hang out to start the hangout and send the notifications to the people you chose.

While you can invite as many people as you want to join a hangout, you can’t have more than 10 people in a hangout at once. If additional people try to enter, they’ll be told the hangout is currently full.

To toggle between profile views:

1. Click  Profile on the left in Google+ or sign in to your Google profile here .
2. Click the View as… menu at the top of your profile and enter the name of the person whose view you’d like to check or choose  Public.
3. Review your profile information from the perspective of the person you’ve selected.

To switch back to your own view, click the View as… menu again and choose Stop viewing as.

If you don’t like what you see, you can click the Edit Profile button then click the section of your profile you’d like to change the visibility of.

Just because a tab is set to be visible, it doesn’t instantly make all the content on the tab visible as well. You can control the privacy of the content that appears in your profile tabs. If you hide your +1′s tab, your +1′s will still appear to anyone who can see that content. If you +1 a post shared with only you and your best friend, no one else will be able to see this information.

To change your tab settings:

1. Click  Profile on the left in Google+ or sign in to your Google profile here .
2. Click the Edit profile button next to your name.
3. Click the tab you’d like to edit.
4. Check or uncheck the ‘Show this tab on your profile’ box and click the Save button.
5. Click the Done editing button at the top of your profile.

Your tab visibility settings only applies to your profile visitors. All tabs on your profile are visible to you, regardless of your settings.

If you’ve joined any Google groups, you’ll continue to receive emails in your inbox after you’ve deleted your Google Account. To stop receiving emails, unsubscribe from a group by sending an email to [Groupname]-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com. For example, if you wanted to leave google-friends, you’d send an email to google-friends-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com

You’ll permanently remove the Google products associated with that account, such as your orkut profile, your iGoogle page, and your Web History.

If you use Gmail with your account, you’ll no longer be able to access that email. You’ll also be unable to reuse your Gmail username.

To delete your Google Account, follow these steps:

1. Sign in on the Google Accounts homepage.  (If you forgot your password, you can reset it).
2. Click Close account and delete all services and info associated with it to delete your account. If you don’t see this link near the bottom of the page, your account was likely created through an organization or company. To delete your account, talk to your domain administrator.
3. Confirm your account deletion. To do so, you’ll need to select these two options: “Yes, I want to delete my account,” and “Yes, I acknowledge that I am still responsible for any charges incurred due to any pending financial transactions.” (You can safely select the latter option if you haven’t used any of Google’s paid products, such as AdWords and Google Checkout, or if you have no pending financial transactions related to these products.)

Restoring a Google Account

If you accidentally deleted your Google Account, you can attempt to restore it by going to our password assistance page within a limited window of time after deletion.

While your name and profile photo are always public, many parts of your profile can be set to only be shared with certain people. If you want to change who they are shared with away from the default, select a new option when editing these parts of your profile.

1. Click the Profile icon  on the left.
2. Click the Edit profile button.
3. Click the About tab.
4. Click the appropriate profile section (example: Introduction).
5. In addition to editing this section, you can specify who you want to be able to view this part of your profile. You can make a pre-made selection (for instance, your extended circles) or you can identify a custom group of circles and people.
6. Repeat these steps for other sections in your profile as needed.
7. Click the Done editing button.

After you update your settings, you can see how your profile appears to others.

• Option 1: Change your profile visibility settings to hide everything except your name and photo from public view. With this option, you can hide the content that appears on your profile without deleting or losing access to anything you’ve already created. The stuff you’ve shared will still be accessible by those you shared with.
• Option 2: Downgrade your Google+ account, which will delete your profile and remove your Google+ posts, circles, and other content. You’ll still be able to access Gmail and most other Google services.
• Option 3: Delete your Google account. You’ll lose access to all Google services and existing data requiring a Google Account. If you use Gmail, your Gmail address can’t be reused.

To downgrade your Google+ profile:

1. Sign in to Google+.
2. Click your full name or email address in the Google bar.
3. Click Account settings.
4. Click the Account overview tab.
5. Click Delete profile and remove associated social features.

To view and adjust your notification settings:

1. Use the menu on the side of the page to switch over to the page you’d like to adjust settings for.
   
2. Click Settings on the side of the stream.
3. If not already selected, click General on the opposite side of the page.
4. Using the check boxes, identify which events you want to generate email and SMS notifications.

Like the notification settings with your Google+ profile, you can identify who’s allowed to send notifications to your page. You can also modify a host of photos settings, such as allowing people to download your photos, and identifying whose photo tags of your page can be automatically approved.

This tool is still a work in progress, so there are a few points to note:

• The tool interface is currently available in English only. The tool will correctly test markup in other languages; however, the results will not look like they will look in an actual non-English search results page.
• The tool will only display extracted information that is officially supported for rich snippets. Supported RDFa attributes are xmlns, typeof, property, rel, and content.

“Insufficient data to generate preview”

In general, the goal of rich snippets is to display the most relevant content on the page to users. If you see an “insufficient data to generate preview” message, it is generally for one of two reasons:

• The marked-up content doesn’t appear to be the main subject of the page. This can happen if the marked-up content is very low down on the page, is found in boilerplate elements such as headers, footers, and navigation, or is included in a hidden HTML element.
• The marked-up content is missing important tags. For example, a Person item must include organization, location, or role, as well as name.

Even if the testing tool shows that your markup is present and correct, it may take some time for rich snippets to appear in Google search results. This is normal.

How do I use Google+ Direct Connect?

When searching for a major brand, company, or cultural entity, try placing a ‘+’ in front of your query. When you use the ‘+’ operator before your search query, it lets us know that you want to find a Google+ page.

• If autocomplete isn’t available: complete your query and press ‘Enter.’ If a Google+ page for your search exists and is compatible with Direct Connect, you’ll immediately be taken to the page.
• If autocomplete is available: as you type, you’ll see results returned that are exclusively Google+ pages. Complete your query, or select from among the page suggestions and you’ll be taken to the page you select.

The first time you use Direct Connect and arrive on a Google+ page, you’ll see the option to join or sign in to Google+ (if you haven’t already), and add the page to your circles. What’s really cool is that you can choose to add pages to your circles automatically every time you use Direct Connect. If you’re logged in to Google+ and arrive on a Google+ page via Direct Connect, you’ll see the option to automatically add pages to your circles when you search using Direct Connect.

If you decide to have pages automatically added to your circles when using Direct Connect, they’ll be added to your ‘Following’ circle. If you don’t have a circle named ‘Following,’ you’ll choose the circle you want to add the page to every time.
If you want to change your setting for automatically adding pages to your circle:

1. Click your profile picture in the Google bar (at the top when you’re using Google+).
2. Select Account settings.
3. Click Google+.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and modify the setting for Google+ pages.

We’re still experimenting with Google+ Direct Connect and it won’t work for every Google+ page. Additionally, some users won’t have access to Direct Connect. As time goes on, we’ll make Direct Connect more widely available.

How do I make my Google+ page eligible for Google+ Direct Connect?

A page’s eligibility for Google+ Direct Connect is determined algorithmically, based on certain signals we use to help understand your page’s relevancy and popularity. In addition to this analysis, we look for a link between your Google+ page and your website. To help Google associate this content, be sure to connect your Google+ page and your website using the Google+ badge, or by adding a snippet of code to your site, in addition to adding your website link to your page.

If you’ve created a Google+ page, we strongly recommend linking from that page to your website and vice versa. Linking your Google+ page and your site like this not only helps you build relationships with friends and followers, but also gives Google information we can use to determine the relevancy of your site to a user query in Google Web Search.

To confirm ownership of a site, Google looks for two things:

• A rel="publisher" link from the main page of your website to your Google+ page. This tells Google that the Google+ page represents the publisher of the site, and makes your site eligible for Google Direct Connect. In addition, the count of +1′s on your Google page reflects the number of +1′s on the home page of your site (but not +1′s on individual pieces of content). If you use the AdWords social extension, this total +1 count is also applied to your ads.
• A reciprocal link back from your Google+ page to the main page of your website.

Use the rich snippets testing tool to check your markup and make sure that Google can extract your page information from your content. This tool will display the markup found on a specific web page, as well as a preview of how that page might appear in Google search results. Learn more.

To link your Google+ page and your website:

1. Add the Google+ badge to your websiteTo add the badge, just grab a snippet of code. Paste it into your HTML code, and you’re done: Your Google+ page and your site are now linked.
2. Link to your website from your Google+ page’s profileFor example, if you’ve created a page for a product, you can add the product description page to your page’s profile. It’s best to link to your home page or most significant page.

We strongly recommend using the Google+ badge—it’s recognizable by users, and it’s easy to implement reliably. If for some reason this does not work for your site, you can manually add a link like this:

Make sure you use the canonical version of your Google+ page URL. This is in the format https://plus.google.com/[yourpageID]. To find the URL of your page, go to your page’s stream and click Get started on the left-hand menu. In the Tell the world section, copy the URL provided.

If you don’t want your link to be visible on the page, add a link tag to the <head> section of your page, like this:

To maximize your +1′s, we recommend:

• A “site-level” +1 button that targets either your Google+ page URL or the URL of your site’s home page. This can be a standalone +1 button or Google+ badge (described on this page) in your site’s header or right-hand navigation.
• A “content-level” +1 button that targets the URL of the page, and appears above the fold, near the article headline, product name, or other significant content.

• Spread the word – While on Google+ acting as your page, click Spread the word on the side of the stream. This will allow you to share your page in a post with people from your personal Google+ profile. The sharing action will come from your personal Google+ profile — not from the Google+ page. For instance, let’s say Raj has a page for his band Didgeridoo and the Kangaroos. If his page spreads the word, the people shared to will see the update as coming from Raj, not from the page.
• Post updates frequently and keep your profile fresh – People are more likely to engage with a page that contains fresh posts and a complete profile. Learn about sharing in Google+ and how to edit your page.
• Linking your Google+ page and your website – This is a great way to drive traffic to your page and it provides an excellent opportunity to engage with your customers and fans in an intimate fashion. Learn how to link your page and website.
• Linking your Google+ page with your AdWords campaign – Connecting your page to your campaigns allows your advertising and page to share +1′s. Any +1′s on your ads will increment the count on your page and vice versa. Learn more about social extensions.
